Pi Day activities

Pi Day, 3.14, is coming up next week! Will you be celebrating it in your classroom? If so, here are a few ideas to consider using with your students:

  • Explore the relationship between the diameter and circumference of a circle, using a  hands-on activity, such as this one from Spoonful.com.

Measuring the diameter and circumference

  • Bake pies and do the activity above using those pies (finding diameter and circumference and comparing the ratio between the two). Then eat the pie, of course!
  • Introduce the digits of pi and challenge students to memorize as many as they can.
  • Tell them about “Pilish,” a writing style that requires writers to use words whose lengths match the digits of Pi. Here is an example that matches the first 8 digits of pi (3.1415926):  “Hey, I want a juicy blueberry or orange.” Fun and challenging!
